How to Write a Press Release for Small Business, Template, and Tips from Linking News

Ever since its inception, the press release has been a mainstay of PR strategy. It may seem to old school for some, but in spite of the emergence of social media, they will not go away any time soon. There is a reason for that; press release remains because they are useful and can produce results.

Entrepreneurs need to learn how to write a press release and distribute them because generating media coverage will position your company as the leader in the industry, which will ultimately help your business succeed and grow.

It is a long process, but in this article, we will focus only on how to write a press release for your small business.

What is a Newsworthy Story

It is hard to decide on whether or not something deserves a press release. For a story to be newsworthy, it should be something that people outside of your organization would care about. Something that has significance to the reporters and consequently to their audiences.

Some of the factors to consider determining the worthiness of a story are its impact, how would it affect the reader. The timeliness, you need to answer why the news story matters now. The proximity, as a small business your news will likely matter to the local community rather than the national ones. Another factor is name recognition. If you are collaborating with big names, it might generate enough attention for the press to consider it.

Small Business Press Release Template

When you are sending out a press release for a small business, your focus must be on the different news media format to pick it up. Your company logo should be in the middle section of the page.

Following the logo will be the company information in the upper left-hand corner of the press release. Right after the contact information will be the phrase “for immediate release.” Start the press copy with a compelling headline. Just like in other press release format, the headline should not go beyond 170 characters, and then it should be catchy enough to get the journalist’s attention. The sub-headline that does not repeat the contents of the headline will follow and then the dateline, which contains the city and date where the news is originating.

Then start with the first paragraph. The body of the press release is not more than three additional paragraphs, each about three to four sentences. Do not forget to add a quote from a relevant authority in your company and then the media contact after the third paragraph. The last paragraph is boilerplate, which contains the short description of your company. The end notation, ‘###’ should close the press release.

In writing the boilerplate, it is your call to action paragraph. It should include the phrase “for more information about this topic contact <email> or <phone>.” You always need the boiler point to make your reader do something after reading your press release.
